Standard steel rails are by far the cheapest solution. They are often installed in garages or kitchens- or any other place that doesn't see too much water. Most standard steel grab bars are chromed (and sometimes knurled) or powdercoated white and are obtainable in a variety of lengths. They can be mounted directly onto the wall and offer a handy and attractive handle for day-to-day use.

If you would prefer to mount the rail in the bathroom, or you live in an area prone to rusting, you are better looking at stainless steel grab rails. They are often satin-finished for better grip and also come in a variety of different lengths. Stainless steel rails can be used in the shower itself for maximum mobility. They can rather easily be mounted to most wall surfaces with a standard powertool and some handyman know-how.

Sometimes you may find yourself in a position where you cannot permanently mount a grab rail. Perhaps you are visiting a friend on holiday, or you are staying in a hotel?
