Using toilet risers and over toilet frames

The toilet can be difficult to use with limited mobility. Most toilets are build very low, and getting off when finished can be a nightmare. Many people are often forced to pull up on the towel rack... and end up in a lot of pain when they break!

A toilet riser is usually made of plastic and fits on top of the toilet. It is generally easy to fit- it has easy hand-operated screws that fit on without tools. It often takes only minutes to adapt to an existing toilet. Due to the height raising (between 2 and 4 inches) you may find removal of the old toilet seat and lid necessary. You may want to combine a toilet riser with other mobility aids to assist in getting on or off the toilet- such as a grab rail. And if you don't want to mount a permanent grab rail in the bathroom you could always consider a suction grab bar which can be easily installed or removed without leaving any markings whatsoever!

Another toilet-safety item available is an over toilet aid. This is a steel or aluminium free-standing frame that sits over the existing toilet. It has four legs that are independently adjustable so that the user can adjust the frame to suit their own individual needs. The benefit of an over toilet frame is that you raise the height while also obtaining two rail-type handles to assist in mounting and dismounting the toilet. Depending on the existing toilet you may find removal of the existing lids necessary, however most toilets can be fitted with an over toilet aid with no preparation at all.
