Bedroom mobility: how to make your room more accessible

Getting from a "laying down" to a "standing up" position can be quite difficult when you live with a disability- you may even hurt yourself in the process. That is why there is a good number of aids designed to assist in helping people with mobility issues get out of bed.

Bed Rails

If you have a non-electric bed, you may want to consider using a bed rail\bed bar. This item is designed to wedge under the mattress and offers a convenient pole to use as a purchase when entering or exiting the bed. This type of setup is generally inexpensive (depending on the system used), is not permanent and can be easily removed. These bed rails come in a variety of styles and setups ranging from single shafts for people that simply need one hand-support, or dual-rail bars that offer an element of safety too!

Perhaps the bed rail doesn't work for you; you can't use them on electric beds. You may prefer to buy a monkey bar, or overbed support pole. This item has a wide base that fits underneath the bed, a long verticle pole that extends upwards with a triangular hand-hold on the end. It allows the user to pull with great force to assist in entering or exiting the bed. The patient still needs to have sufficient upper body strength to use this aid by themselves, or it can be used as an assist pole when a carer is present.
