Forearm Crutches
Forearm crutches- also known as 'Canadian Crutches'- either have a full circle or half circle at the top, followed by a hand grip. Patients simply stick their hand through the circle and hold the hand grip. Forearm crutches that have a half circle on top are used when there is a higher chance of the patient falling, as it can be quite hard to get your hand out of the full circle during a fall, although forearm crutches with the full circle are seen to provide a higher level of stability when the patient is upright, as the arm has no chance of slipping out. The cuff can also be handy when the user needs to reach for a cup or other object (the crutch can hang from the forearm). A high quality set of forearm crutches are recommended for patients suffering from permanent disability where standard underarm crutches and hurt (and cause permanent damage) when used for excessive periods.
