Rollator-type Walking Frames

Rollators (sometimes called 'wheely walkers') are a very popular walking aid for people that want to venture both outside and inside the home. They have four wheels, brakes, a basket (usually below the seat or in front of the walker) or vinyl bag and often a seat. There are quite a few subtleties when it comes to choosing the right rollator for your needs.

Rollators generally have two choices when it comes to brakes. The brake system that is generally the most popular is the cable-brake system. These rollator walking frames have two bicycle-type brake levers on the handles that allow the user to slow themselves if they are moving too fast (e.g- descending a ramp), or lock down if they want to stop the machine entirely (e.g- to use the seat).

There is also a type of rollator braking system called 'compression brakes' or 'push-down brakes'. This method allows the user to lean on the frame causing two rubber stoppers to contact the ground and stop the machine. Push-down brake rollators are great for people who occasionally trip or fall forward, have balance issues etc. However, if the user is going to lean heavily on the frame for support, you may find they will drag the brakes along causing them to wear prematurely.

There are a number of other differences between rollator brands and models. Some use vinyl bags (hides handbag and catches coins), others baskets (stronger). Some have fitted 8 inch castors (better for outdoors), whilst others retain the 5-6 inch wheels (less cumbersome). Another popular choice of is the three-wheeled rollator frame. Due to it having only one wheel at the front, people say that the manouvrability is remarkable and you can get it into smaller spaces. Whatever you may need, there should be a rollator to assist your requirements.
